1. Which description do you think best fits games like wyfio? Online riddle, webpuzzle, enigma or something else?

I’ve grappled with this issue more than I would like to. Most players seem happy with ‘online riddle’ or ‘webpuzzle’ though so that’s fine by me.

2. Do you remember the very first online riddle that you played? If so, do you have any memories that you’d like to share.

To the disbelief of some players, I had never even heard of ‘online riddles’ - or even Titans of the genre, like Notpron – when I started out. I wrote a blog post about this at the time, which is by far the most visited post I’ve made to date.

I have taken a look at a lot of different riddles since, but I never really go deep as I am too pre-occupied with creating my own puzzles.

3. What is your all time favourite online riddle, and why?

Not sure I can answer this one?

4. Is there a riddle, no longer available, that you’d like to see resurrected?

Would be cool to see Godtower: The Skill of God in full as it was the first online riddle to be compared to wyfio. And even though some levels are still on archive.org and navigable via a flash emulator, it’s too fragmentary in that state to be much fun.

I’d also like to see how Lagoon’s Interactive Puzzle Adventure (1999) plays out. I think I stumbled across this Googling something like ‘internet riddle’ and I’d like to see more.

5. What riddle had the hardest level that you’ve managed to beat, and how long did it take?

I’ll flip this question on its head a bit and think about the hardest levels to create. Finding a satisfactory route through ‘a rose’ must have taken 8-10 hours of back and forth. I can’t think any particular puzzle has taken longer to create than that – once the basic idea is in place that is.

6. What stands out as being different or unique about wyfio compared to other riddles?

I think the structure, variety of puzzle mechanics, and subject matter are all unique – whilst recognising that a lot of riddles are unique in their own right if measured by the ‘subject’ dimension. I think it also defies convention in a lot of ways – not having been aware of it in the first place :)

7. Of the thousands of riddles out there, which, if any, do you think are most similar to wyfio?

I’ll take MishuAnubis’ word for it that there aren’t any.

8. Do you have any particular favourite wyfio puzzles or puzzle types?

There are so many that I’m really happy with but I’ll just go with ones that are at the forefront of my mind; mystica’s potion part ii, million dollar graveyard, set traces, white light, and the later diatom puzzles. I also like working with players to develop their ideas for puzzles, and giving them equal parity with every other puzzle on the gameboard.

9. What advice would you have to other players to make as much progress on wyfio as they possibly can?

10. Do you have any projects of your own that you would like to promote?

I have lots of half-baked ideas. So far, this is the only one that’s ever really manifested itself in reality.
